As the Green Honors Chair, Germano will discuss immigration issues with students and faculty during his visit to campus. On Monday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m., Germano will screen his documentary, The Other Side of Immigration, in a free event open to the public that will take place in the BLUU auditorium.
“I am delighted that TCU students, faculty and staff, along with the Fort Worth community, will have the opportunity to be a part of this screening,” said Ryan Schmitz, assistant professor of Spanish & Hispanic Studies. “When I first attended a screening of Roy’s film, I was very impressed by the level of dialogue that it sparked and the talented way in which he guided this discourse, utilizing both his formal educational background in political science and personal experience from his time in Mexico. I encourage all who are able to attend.”
Germano is currently the Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Politics at the New School in New York City and is the director/producer of The Other Side of Immigration. Germano’s doctoral dissertation was funded by the National Science Foundation and was based on more than 700 interviews he conducted in the Mexican countryside in the state of Michoacán, advancing a unique theory about the billions of dollars Mexican immigrants send home every year. Feeling a deep urge to share the powerful narratives he discovered in Mexico with a wider audience, Germano devoted his energies to learning how to film, edit and produce his first documentary film. The Other Side of Immigration explores why so many people leave small Mexican towns to work in the U.S. and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind.
