Digging work on east campus
Published: 8/20/2012

Preliminary work has begun on the east campus to locate underground utilities for the design of the new Bass and Library additions, the new Academy of Tomorrow building and the Energy Institute.

Last week, digging began in the area bounded by the Library, Sid Richardson, Tucker and Tandy, including the parking lot between the Bass and Tandy buildings. The exact location of utilities must be pinpointed to enable designers to prepare plans for The Academy of Tomorrow.  Determining exact locations is also necessary so the construction company (Linbeck) does not accidently hit utilities and cause disruption to campus activities.

Non-destructive methods are being used to dig holes.  The equipment is very noisy since it involves the use of a water jet and vacuuming the mud away.  The holes must be left open until surveyors get GPS coordinates and depth elevations.  The contractor will place warning tapes to keep people away.  TCU groundskeepers will repair the grassy areas the following week.

Until the work is finished, crews will work evenings and Saturdays when there is scant pedestrian traffic. Noisy equipment will be stopped if classroom activities are being disturbed.
