Beginning mid-January, work along West Berry Street between S. University Drive and Waits Avenue shifts to the south side of the street and the closure of the existing two eastbound lanes.

Traffic traveling both eastbound and westbound will share the newly-created roadway on the north side of Berry Street.

The new construction zone eliminates any turns from Berry Street south onto Cockrell, Greene, Waits, Lubbock or Merida Avenues. All businesses facing north on Berry between these streets will remain open during this transition, although access by car will only be possible from the south via W. Devitt Street.

The $1.98 million street improvement project, funded largely by a grant from the North Central Texas Council of Governments, is converting the six lanes and continuous turn lanes to four lanes and medians.

Motorists will use the two outside lanes for parking, and those will be turned into protected parallel parking using concrete "bulb-outs." The new medians will eliminate only one turn on westbound Berry from northbound Cockrell Avenue, between the 7-Eleven and Fuzzy's Taco Shop. The project will also include wider sidewalks, landscaping and benches, particularly around bus stops.
