North
Texas area students will compete Wednesday, March 20, in the TCU College of
Education Regional Spelling Bee with hopes of advancing to the annual Scripps
National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The bee is scheduled for 9 a.m. to
noon in the BLUU.
The winner will also receive an opportunity to take a TCU audit course in the
summer.
Fort Worth Star-Telegram columnist Bud Kennedy
and Mary Patton, dean of the College of Education, will welcome the guests.
Judges are Robin Griffith, Ranae Stetson and Fran Huckaby (from the College
of Education) and Linda Lee, a longtime teacher and judge. The
pronouncer is Cynthia Walters, longtime English teacher and local pronouncer.
Spelling
bee contestants have come a long way already: They first had to win at the
local level, hosted by 457 schools in a 16 county area, and then went on to win
one of 25 area bees. Students competing in this regional spelling bee represent
public, private, parochial, charter and home schools located throughout North
Texas.
The
TCU College of Education Regional Spelling Bee is sponsored by the COE's Center for Urban Education and the Star-Telegram.
