Campus-wide Language & Culture Fest set for Sept. 24-26



The TCU Language & Culture Fest, scheduled to take place from Sept. 24-26, is a campus-wide event organized by the Department of Modern Language Studies and the Department of Spanish and Hispanic Studies, with support from a large committee comprised of faculty and students from a wide variety of academic departments.
The Fest’s primary objective is to enhance participants’ sensitivity to human cultural diversity and to underscore the importance of the study of foreign languages as the indispensable aid to understanding that diversity. The event will demonstrate the value of cross-cultural competence and its capacity to enrich the dynamics of our contemporary globalized order. Notable events include:
• Keynote address by Rob Schmitz, China Bureau Chief of American Public Media's Marketplace. He will recount his experiences as a language student and explain how his immersion in foreign cultures laid the foundation for his success as an international journalist. Preceding the address will be Chinese folk music by Dallas HuaYun Traditional Chinese Music Band (Tues, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Ed Landreth Auditorium).
• Screening of Mad Hot Ballroom to be followed by salsa dancing lessons led by Calirumba and accompanied by a sizzling salsa band (Wed, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Commons).
• TCU Jazz Band Concert: World Influences on Jazz (Thurs, Sept. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in the BLUU Amphitheater).
