The inaugural lecture of the Distinguished Lecture Series in Chemistry will be presented by Sir Harold Kroto, Ph.D., winner of the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The public event will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14 in the University Union Ballroom, preceded by an open reception at 6 p.m. for those wishing to meet the speaker.

Title of Dr. Kroto's lecture is "Science and Society in the 21st Century." The Nobel honoree is recognized for his co-discovery of C60 almost 25 years ago.  Shaped like a soccer ball but 1,000,000,000 times smaller, this molecule is made up of 60 carbon atoms. Its discovery challenged the way people thought about carbon and bonds between atoms.
