Self-proclaimed pop culture junkie and comic book nerd Jeramy Kraatz can also call himself a published author at the ripe old age of 26. His young adult novel, The Cloak Society, is the first in a new series from Harper and is out this month.

 

Kraatz tells the story of a boy with telekinetic powers, born into a family of super-villains. It’s the kind of book he would have wanted to read as a kid, he says. A native of Odessa, Kraatz studied advertising and English at TCU (a 2008 graduate) and got an M.F.A. in nonfiction writing from Columbia University.

 

Kraatz, who works in the animation industry in Grapevine, returns to his Fort Worth alma mater Nov. 14 for a 7 p.m. reading in the Moudy Bldg. S. The event is free and open to the public.

 

“I’ve worked as a snow-cone maker, barista, retail mannequin dresser and intern at Marvel Comics. When I’m not writing about superpowers, I watch a lot of cartoons,” Kraatz notes. “Who says you have to grow up?”
